Welcome back to The Productivity for Profit podcast— this is where we  explore how to grow your small business with more focus, clarity and ease, so that you can finally stop overworking - with little to show for it, and start actually achieving the goals that feel right, and that translate into your big vision of the future.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by all the moving parts of your business, or you’re not quite sure where to start making the changes necessary to see better results, — today’s episode is going to help you to reboot and get moving again in a better direction, as a more effective business owner.

Because we’re talking about something that completely changes the way you plan and take action: starting with the ideal end in mind.

Why We Get Stuck
Most business owners start the year, or even a new week, with a long list of things they think they should be doing, such as posting on social media. Launching yet another new offer. Or rewriting their website – for the umpteenth time.

And before they know it, they’re knee-deep in tasks and to-do’s… but without a real plan, being busy not really moving any closer to the big vision (that’s if they even have a ‘big vision’.)

It’s that classic feeling of being busy yet not feeling productive, because you’re  constantly working in your business, not on your business.  Doing all the stuff, but without a purpose or vision of what you’re actually working towards.

And when you’re juggling so many responsibilities — clients, family, admin, marketing — it can feel impossible to step back and think about the big picture.  When you’re in the weeds, you can’t see the wood for the trees as the going says. You’re too focused on the details to see the bigger picture, to remember what this is all for, and how it all relates.

That’s where “starting with the end in mind” becomes so powerful.  If you change nothing else, change this one thing, and you’ll start to operate completely differently, and importantly, feel very differently as you grow your business.

So what does starting with the end in mind really mean?
Now, when I say start with the end in mind, I don’t just mean setting a vague goal like “make more money” or “grow my business.”

It’s about getting crystal clear on what success actually looks and feels like for you.

What’s the outcome you really want by the end of the quarter, or by  the end of next year — not just in numbers, but in the way you work, the kind of clients you serve, the freedom you have in your schedule?

When you can picture that clearly, it’s like adjusting the focus on a camera — suddenly, everything sharpens.

You start to see what’s essential, and worth your time and energy, and what’s just noise.  What to do, and what to let go.

Here’s why this matters so much.  When you start with the end in mind:

  • You create real clarity — you know exactly where you’re heading, and that alone reduces the feeling of being overwhelmed.
  • You can plan backwards, identifying the individual projects and steps that will actually get you to your perfect outcome.
  • You build focus — because it’s easier to say “no” to those things that in fact mere distractions.  When you’re clear on your direction, only that which gets you closer needs to be a priority.
  • And you maintain your motivation — because every small action feels like it has a clear compelling purpose.

Without a defined end goal, it’s like trying to build a house without a plan. You might gather the materials and start hammering away — but you’ll be wasting time, energy, and resources on output that has no defined result, and you won’t recognise what you’re building. And you just end up with something that doesn’t fulfil you or your heart-led vision.

Overcoming Resistance
Now, I know that for many, the idea of planning can be a bit triggering.  It can feel… heavy or overwhelming, and it’s not clear where to get started.

It may trigger limiting beliefs like: “I don’t have time for that right now,” or “I’m just too busy to plan, I just need to do it.”  Or even “planning will stifle my creativity” – yes I hear that often.

But planning doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s not about creating a 30-page document or mapping out every tiny detail.

It’s about giving yourself a destination — because that helps you make better decisions at every step.   Did you know that your unconscious mind, the mind that determines most of your daily behaviours and thoughts, doesn’t solve problems, it goes in directions, so use your conscious mind to point it where you want to go, the path you want your unconscious mind to follow. If you don’t, it will default to what it already knows.  To the thoughts, beliefs and therefore the actions it’s familiar with.  And you’ll carry on repeating old patterns without realising.  Your unconscious loves familiarity.  And it will always default to that unless you direct it otherwise. So, if you want something different, use your conscious mind to re-educate your unconscious mind.  This is a crucial step to reaching new goals, especially ones that feel a little scary and ambitious.

Even if you only focus on the next couple of steps — that’s enough to start building momentum. The important thing is to stay aware of how they are relevant to reaching your chosen ideal outcome.  How they keep you on track and following the shortest most direct road to the goal.  This is going to support you to start taking action. Because remember, clarity comes from doing, not from waiting until everything’s perfect

Let’s say your goal for 2026 is to double your income without working longer hours.

When you start with that specific end in mind, you can ask better questions. And the quality of your life, and business is determined by the quality of questions you ask yourself. This is a well-known core concept in Neuro Linguistic programming. Questions like:

  • Which of my offers or services will make that possible?  How many sales will it take?
  • What systems need to be in place to free up my time so that I can stay more focused on my goal and not distracted or drawn off course?
  • What marketing activities will attract the right clients for this specific offer or product?

You can then map out a path that actually feels aligned with your vision and make it easily achievable, rather than overwhelming.

That’s the beauty of starting with the end in mind — it simplifies everything.  Because everything needs to take you closer to that set destination, that ideal outcome.  Everything else is just a distraction and can be let go.  If it doesn’t support my goal, it doesn’t deserve my energy.  This is a boundary that guarantees that you will feel more ease as you plan and then take action.

So  if you’re listening to this thinking, “Yes, I want exactly that. That level of clarity, but I’m still not sure how to get there…” — that’s exactly what we’ll be doing inside my upcoming 2 day online 2026 Planning Event, and it’s what we do on an ongoing basis in the POP Business Boutique Membership – my online business mentoring group.

The ’Ideal Outcome’ is that you’ll walk away with a focused, aligned plan that feels right for you — not a cookie-cutter approach, but something that fits your business, your energy, and your life.

Because when you start with the end in mind, you’re not just reacting to what’s in front of you — you’re intentionally creating what’s ahead of you.

Thanks for listening to this episode of the Productivity for Profit podcast.

If today’s episode resonated with you, I’d love you to share it with a fellow business owner who could use a little (or a lot) of clarity and encouragement.

And remember — clarity isn’t something you find. It’s something you create, one intentional step at a time. And you don’t have to do it alone.

Until next time, take a breath, start with the end in mind, and keep moving in the right direction.  See you next time.
